handmade journeys

Set along East London’s canal network, Jack Powell’s LCBA Workshop is a building that expresses the craft of bookbinding in architectural form. Using thread, paper, and the hand skills of the London Centre for Book Arts community, the project weaves together a new type of public factory—one that protects creative freedom, celebrates subcultural expression, and quietly resists censorship. Jack’s process involved studying the tools and rituals of bookmaking to invent new tectonics: folded walls, stitched joints, and paper-wrapped timber frames. Repair in this case means keeping ideas alive—amplifying the quiet resilience of independent publishing through space-making that is tactile, expressive, and communal.
