repair for comfort

'my slipper'

Set on a polluted site in Poplar, Shuheng Wang’s project tackles repair as ecological remediation through community-led action. Over an 8-year phased timeline, families participate in constructing a mycelium remediation centre—first removing contaminated soil, then growing a building that cleans other soils across London. The architecture unfolds slowly, layer by layer, built with and by those it serves. Inspired by fungal networks and collective kinship, the project is both a metaphor and mechanism for healing. Shuheng’s process included intensive material testing, speculative phasing, and scaled scenarios that account for real-life rhythms. Here, repair is neither fast nor flashy; it is slow, symbiotic, and deeply intergenerational.
