'the kitchen estate'

In the diasporic Bangladeshi community along Commercial Road, Harshal Gulabchandre sees a crisis of housing and hunger—and an opportunity to build solidarity. The Kitchen Estate is a vertically layered proposal combining social housing, a community kitchen, and an urban farm. Using self-built rammed earth techniques and recycled materials sourced locally, Harshal created a place where growing, cooking, and living intersect. His process included collaborative fieldwork, prototyping wall sections, and mapping food flows in East London. More than a building, it’s a socio-technical system designed for empowerment. Repair here is direct and intersectional—it addresses nourishment, equity, and the politics of urban land.
